2003-2004

From Our Co-Presidents

The Stratton Foundation’s goal is simple; to help the community, and we never lose sight of that. This past year demonstrates well our commitment to that vision. Not only did we pursue traditional methods of supporting the community, but we also launched other efforts that we think will help local non-profits help themselves.

No annual report would be complete without a financial summary. We had a great year, raising more money than ever and giving more money away. If you were to draw a graph of the growth of our grant program, you would find yourself staring at a line that is nearly vertical. Taking a page from the annual report of Berkshire Hathaway, we want to suggest that there is no way we can expect to continue to grow as we did this year, but unlike Warren Buffet, we proclaim that we will make every effort to do so. You will find a list of the grant recipients in this report.

The distribution of grants has historically had a broad range from the arts to medicine, from community services to education, and from athletic programs for kids to the environment. This year represented a continuation of that pattern. While it is important to recognize that there is something of interest to almost everyone in our grant program, it is more important to recognize how deeply we extend the program into the roots of the community. Many of the local non-profits that we give grants to are truly grass-roots organizations that are desiring of funds, and those that are better funded are central to the well-being of the community.

In addition to the grant program, we sought to support local non-profits by hosting a fund raising seminar last fall. We will be doing this again and hope that those organizations and individuals not represented this year will take advantage of this free service. We are excited by another program that is the inspiration of one of our Advisory Board members, Abby Rosenthal. Under Abby’s guidance, we will be hosting web pages, on our web site, for local organizations. In addition to describing the organizations, these web pages will provide a list of needs and their attendant costs. We hope that many people will be inspired by these stories to give to the organizations directly.

Of course, all these efforts are directly the result of our Board Members and volunteers and our donors. We have a wonderful family of supporters and we are eternally grateful that they share our vision for a better community through the efforts of the Stratton Foundation.

History is littered with great quotes, but among the ones that expresses an appropriate humility and gratitude is the one from Sir Isaac Newton where he states that “if I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” Not quite of the stature of Newton but unique in their own way, the departing members of the Stratton Foundation board, Barbara, Diana, Kimet and Michael set the stage upon which all further successes were made possible.

We hope that these departing board members are fully cognizant of our gratitude, and we hope they recognize that the community is a better place for their efforts. We thank them for volunteering, for their time and for their insight. It remains for the rest of us to build upon the contributions of these board members in a way that reflects well on their work.

Of course, if Barbara, Diana, Kimet or Michael feel compelled to return to the fold in the future, our doors will be wide open for them. Any organization would benefit from their council and their contributions, but unique to the foundation, the whole community would profit from their association.

As in years past, we are grateful to our advisory board member, Hubert Schriebl, for his constant photographic contributions to our events and other activities. A past winner of the Emo Heinrich award, Hubert is a mainstay in the community, widely recognized for his love of Vermont and its beautiful mountains and valleys.

Case Statement

Meeting the Mission
The mission of the Stratton Foundation is to enhance the quality of life and create a sense of community in Southern Vermont. In order to achieve this mission the Stratton Foundation seeks members, creates events and programs, solicits contributions, and distributes grants to non-profit organizations in the community.

The Stratton Foundation realizes that, as the ski area has grown, the strong sense of community experienced by the first generation of Stratton skiers diminished. Many area communities developed because people who were initially drawn to the resort moved off into villages and towns to become residents, employers, employees, entrepreneurs, volunteers, town officials, families and retirees.

The Stratton Foundation sees itself, its events and programs, and its links with the area history, as a means to encourage that sense of community among second homeowners and between them and area residents. The Foundation understands that many of the community organizations supported by Foundation grants enhance the lives of the residents who in turn provide many of the services to the second home community.

Events and Programs
The Foundation’s mission is to “to enhance the quality of life and to create a sense of community in Southern Vermont.” The Foundation’s challenge is to raise funds while simultaneously meeting the mandate of the mission. A direct appeal and annual memberships aid the cause as well as events such as The Stratton Challenge, Men Who Cook, and the Tink Smith Golf Tournament. These events, coupled with Symposiums, the Stratton Archives and the Emo Henrich award, further the mission of the Foundation by creating contacts and recognizing the rich history and culture of the greater Stratton community.

The Grant Program
Projects funded through the Foundation’s Grant Program have resulted in strengthened crucial services, infrastructure, educational institutions, health organizations and all aspects of life that are vital to maintain strong, growing communities for second homeowners and residents alike. The benefits associated with supporting the Stratton Foundation are visible everywhere in the community and enhance the value of every home owner’s property.

98 charitable organizations in the areas of the arts, humanities, cultural activities, environment, health, civic and public affairs, social services, athletics and education have been awarded Stratton Foundation grants. Projects funded by grants bring people and resources together to solve problems and meet community needs in a manner that insures a lasting impact.

People become members, volunteer for events, serve on the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards, and identify with the Foundation because they recognize the financial support the Grant Program provides to local organizations. Each year grant requests are not filled due to lack of funds. The Foundation is working towards the day when all worthy projects are 100% funded.

The Stratton Foundation Today
Since October of 1996, the Stratton Foundation has become a well-respected organization in southern Vermont and has been recognized for an effective and growing grant program and innovative and successful entertaining as well as educational event’s calendar. A dynamic synergy exists between the Foundation and the residents that it serves. Memberships and volunteers are drawn from interested second homeowners, area residents, Stratton Resort’s Staff and The Advisory Board.
The Advisory Board, established in 1998, provides community feedback and serves as a springboard for membership to the Board of Directors. While the Foundation has no financial or organizational ties with Stratton Resort, the Resort provides locations, support services and personnel crucial to the success of events and income. Stratton Resort’s homeowners are welcomed into the community at events and programs and given an opportunity to experience and contribute to the area where they come to spend their leisure time.
All are rewarded with communities strengthened by the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie treasured by the Founding Families, honored by the Resort and enhanced by the Stratton Foundation.

Why We Need You

Become part of the community traditions
Towns on and around Stratton Mountain are growing as are the demands on the Stratton Foundation to expand programs that support and build strong communities. Annually only a small percentage of our grants are totally funded and requests are increasing in size and number. Area towns are looking to the Foundation to help with social, educational and physical needs resulting from area growth and budget restrictions. In order to respond the Foundation needs people and businesses to contribute financially and personally.
Here are ways that you can pitch in:

• Donate to Archives

Make a generous financial contribution to membership, the annual Direct Appeal and consider planned giving.
Volunteer for events and move towards assuming greater responsibility as a member of the Advisory Board and, ultimately, the Board of Directors. These are the crucial people that give of their time and energy that make the Foundation a success.

The Stratton Foundation hosts a variety of events throughout the year as part of our mission. The main objective of events is to bring people together to create a sense of community. Events also help the Foundation raise money for its grant program, which supports many local non-profit organizations.
