STRATTON FOUNDATION ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT 2006-'07

Andy Avery“Building a Better Community”...a simple goal...yet difficult to realize.

What does it take to accomplish this, the mission of the Stratton Foundation? As our good friend and founding Executive Director Barbara McCarty showed us, it takes energy and enthusiasm, intelligence and discipline, grace and empathy, and a true belief in and dedication to achieving that goal.

We lost Barbara this spring after a difficult bout with cancer...but she remains with us in all we do at the Stratton Foundation. As our guiding light for these past ten years, Barbara showed us how to take an idea and nurture it into a vibrant community foundation–one that has touched and continues to touch thousands of lives for the better–helping to build an even better community in this wonderful place we call home–or, for many of us, our “home away from home.” Upon her retirement last December, the Board renamed our community grants in honor of Barbara. These McCarty Grants will continue to impact the greatest number of area non-profit organizations. Under Barbara’s leadership, more than 130 different groups have received these grants over the past ten years. It is a fitting tribute to our friend!

We give a special welcome to our new Executive Director, Jim Morey. Jim lives in Windham, Vermont with his wife Leslie and has enthusiastically taken on the challenge of continuing the good work and growth of the Foundation. We are also happy to welcome Dick Malley to our Executive Board. Dick’s extensive experience with various not-for-profit organizations in the Manchester area, including Burr & Burton Academy and Habitat for Humanity, will be of great value to the Foundation.

We are extremely proud to report that the Foundation has received its largest single gift to date: $50,000 from Antoinette Stafford. Antoinette truly loved this unique Vermont area and was a long time supporter of the Foundation, naming the Foundation as a beneficiary when she established a Charitable Remainder Trust. We thank the Stafford family for this profound demonstration of support for our efforts.

Everyday, we ask ourselves two simple questions: Are we making progress in building a better community? Has the quality of life in our corner of southern Vermont been enhanced by our efforts? We believe the answer is a resounding YES! A full list of 2006-2007 McCarty and Focus Grant recipients (55 in all!) can be found starting on page six and is an eloquent testimony to the efforts and contributions of hundreds of folks to our goal of “building a better community.” We thank each and every one of you for your enthusiastic support!

In order to continue to address the ever expanding needs of our growing area, we need to build our level of participation and support. As you will see later in this Annual Progress Report, increasing the number of “Friends of the Foundation” is one of our principal dreams for our new year. Please come join your friends and neighbors at one of our events … please contribute to our upcoming Annual Fund … it is a fun group of people working hard to benefit so many, right here in our own special corner of the world.

We are excited about the future and very proud of our first ten years of accomplishments. THANK YOU for sharing our vision and for your continued contribution of “time, talent and treasure”.

Stratton Foundation Grants focus on five areas:

1. Fire and Safety
Stratton Mountain Fire Department
Stratton Mountain
“The Stratton Foundation has a unique grasp of the need to support local fire departments, improving the security for all home owners. Our department is a small volunteer group which like many in the area has been affected by restrictive town budgets. Through the Foundations fund raising efforts and long term commitment, we are better prepared to serve our town.”John Waite, President

2. Health & Social Services
Mountain Valley Medical Clinic
Londonderry
“This clinic is a nonprofit, full service medical facility seeing over 10,000 visits annually. Patients consist of residents of and visitors to the area alike. The Stratton Foundation has supported the clinic for many years and with seventeen grants, to allow the purchase of equipment which otherwise would be unavailable and which improves the quality of care delivered to those we serve.”Dr. Roger Fox, MVMC physician for over 30 years

3. Recreation & the Environment
Vermont Youth Conservation Corps

Richmond
"As this past year was our first McCarty Grant from the Stratton Foundation, we are very excited to have forged this new partnership between our organizations. The VYCC has completed projects on the West River Trail, Ball Mountain Dam, and at Townshend, Jamaica and Lowell Lake State Parks, over the last several years. As a group of leaders from the local community, the Stratton Foundation Board and staff is very much in tune with the needs of their area, especially in the fields of youth programs, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable outdoor recreation. Their sincere appreciation of Vermont’s natural resources and support of the VYCC will help insure continued good works in this area..."Patrick Kell, Grant Program Director

4. Education
The Mountain School at Winhall

“Being a small independent school, we rely on fundraising and foundation grants to supplement student tuition. As there are no State funds to "guarantee" our budget–every dollar counts. Stratton Foundation grants have made a very real difference, assisting us in reaching our goals of educational excellence, art and technology integration, and a local/national/global approach. One particular example is a grant which provided a reading tutor to students on a one-to-one basis three days a week. Seeing one of our students go from a child that hated to read, was below grade level, and was self conscious, to one that volunteers to read in class, is above level, feels good about herself, and knocks on that same teacher's door to read with her--two years after that grant expired!--is amazing. This individual attention and dedication to give our children the best education has resulted in our students testing 20% over the state average in Reading. We rely on like-minded individuals, businesses, and foundations–like the Stratton Foundation–to support our mission to educate young people to be productive citizens and employees.Your giving has and will make a difference, both today and tomorrow.”Daren Houck, Head of School

5. Community & Arts
Manchester Music Festival

Manchester
"The Manchester Music Festival (MMF) is both honored and deeply grateful to have been selected to receive one of Stratton Foundation's coveted Focus Grants. The grant of $5,000 will provide major support for the MMF’s 2007/08 ‘Meet the Music' program. This program will bring classical music into direct contact with schools in the local area which otherwise would have no such opportunity. The coming generation of children, along with their teachers and parents, will have access to fine music, which has been proven to be vital in the nurturing of creative, well-rounded individuals and to the quality of life for the community at large. The MMF has been the grateful recipient of nine grants from the Foundation since 2002, now qualifying for our Focus Grant. We consider them as among our strongest allies in the ongoing promotion of arts and culture in the Northshire and beyond."Ariel Rudiakov, Artistic Director

Focus Grants
Focus Grants are larger annual grants (+$5,000), can be multi-year commitments (up to three years) and are designed to help an organization implement a compelling new initiative that can, within our commitment timeframe, become self-sustaining. We think of them as major project “Seed Money.” As in all of our Grants, funds are awarded to those organizations that demonstrate vision, planning and executional skills and commit to monitor, evaluate and report on the impact of these Focus Grant funds.

Glen and Rose Boynton
Windham, VT
“From its conception, the Stratton Foundation has demonstrated unique strength and usefulness due to its size and its people; small enough to be “human-sized”, big enough to successfully attract enough funds to make a difference. It is a strong bridge between second homeowners and year-rounders, between those with needs and those with the desire to help, between short-term emergency assistance and projects that build for the future. The simple grant application procedures place as little burden as possible on busy staff and volunteers from smaller agencies who need our help. Our ultimate goal has always been to say yes to those who can make a better life for our neighbors, and the Stratton Foundation does just that, quietly, effectively and with great humanity.” – Glenn Boynton

Frankie and Jay Oberst
Stratton, VT, Livingston, NJ
“My reasons for supporting the Stratton Foundation are twofold. First and foremost, I felt that I wanted to do some charitable work in Vermont where we have a vacation home and spend so much of our time. I learned that there was a real financial need in many of the surrounding communities, and the Foundation's grant program effectively addressed this need. Secondly, I thought it would be a great way to meet new people, and become part of the Stratton community through participation in their many social events. I truly enjoyed the people I have met and Barbara McCarty became a wonderful friend, who I dearly miss. Seeing all the good things the Foundation has accomplished is truly rewarding. As we spend even more time in this wonderful place, we plan to continue to be a part of the Stratton Foundation”
– Frankie Oberst

Alan and Mindy Bloom
Dorset, VT
Alan: "My wife and I have been coming to Vermont for 31 years, and retired in the Northshire, 8 years ago. We have been very aware of the many grants made by the Stratton Foundation to Northshire organizations, and how much they have added to the quality of life in our communities. We are proud to be a part of this special group of dedicated people."
Mindy: “We have personally known many people on the Executive and Advisory Boards over the years. The Stratton Foundation has the experience and a very clear understanding of how best to serve the community. We have chosen the Foundation as our primary Vermont charity, knowing our contributions will truly make a difference for many people, in many ways throughout the area."

Tami and Steve Blanchard
Winhall, VT
“Our family is proud to be a supporter of the Stratton Foundation. Our daughters have been lucky enough to have benefited from the Foundation’s generosity and support of various programs, starting from the time they were three and attending West River Montessori School, into grade school at The Mountain School and now, high school at Burr & Burton Academy. The Stratton Foundation has made a very real difference in our family’s life, as with so many others in this community in which we work and live. Thank you Stratton Foundation.”–Steve & Tamatha Blanchard

Ed and Jen Dorta-Duque

Three Mountain Inn, Jamaica
“One of the reasons we moved to Jamaica was to be part of Vermont's "sense of community–neighbor helping neighbor"–the Stratton Foundation clearly embodies that philosophy and has a visible, positive impact on our local community.”

Stratton Foundation Traditions
The 110% Award: Pat Meulemans
This award is given annually to special people who go above and beyond in generously giving of their time and resources. Pat’s efforts supporting the Foundation can be seen in many events, publications and projects. She was instrumental in designing our website and remains our webmaster, always bringing original and creative ideas to improve our communications. Pat and her husband Greg contribute to the E-Auction, and participate each year in the Men Who Cook event as well as being involved on the Board of Directors and our Advisory Board. They are also active with other area charities. Pat joins 110% award winners from last year, Kim Thomson and Hubert Schriebl.

Emo Henrich Award 2006: Tom Head
The Stratton Foundation presents this Award annually for exemplary community service and professional achievement. The award is named for Emo Henrich, the first director of the Stratton Ski School which started in 1961. Emo, originally from Austria, saw ski instructors as ambassadors of good will for the Resort. He recruited many instructors who shared his musical abilities and Tyrolean Evenings with the Stratton Mountain Boys became a major social happening in those early years.

This year’s recipient was Thomas Head. Tom and his wife Joanne have been coming to their Mountain home since 1962, and are long time friends of Emo and Ann Henrich. Tom is a dedicated ski racer and competed until 1999, including in many Veteran and Janeway Cup programs. He was an early and important supporter of the junior ski racing program, helping put Stratton on the map in this area. Early on, Tom volunteered as a Trustee of the Stratton Mountain School and was recently honored for his long service. He has also been a strong supporter of the Chapel of the Snows, the Carlos Otis Clinic and of course the Stratton Foundation.

Tom is an all around outdoors person, who has contributed greatly to the development of the Stratton community. The Award was made on December 9th in the Bear’s Den at the base lodge. Tom and Joanne were joined by past recipients Casey & Ruthie Rowley, Mary Beth Hand, Stuart Coleman, Hubert Schriebl, Wendy Cram and Jessie Snyder.

The Stratton Archives
The mission of the Stratton Archives is to collect, preserve and display items, recordings, films, photographs, recollections and memorabilia relating to the history of Stratton Mountain Ski Resort and the nearby area since 1960. An extensive amount of material has been collected and organized for the use and enjoyment of historians, homeowners and community members. Archive Coordinator Kimet Hand has been compiling this valuable resource with great dedication since 1972 and the collection now exceeds two thousands individual items. Additional donations are always appreciated and can be made by contacting Kimet at 802-362-4971, or e-mail kimet@sover.net.

Volunteers
“The Stratton Foundation shares my vision of community but, more than that, helps realize my vision. It’s up-close, hands-on, local philanthropy…they see needs and help meet those needs, working through organizations across the region that help others. They’re effective. They make a difference. That’s why I volunteer.”
–Debbie Peretz

When one considers all the activities that are executed each year by this one unique organization, one starts to appreciate the scale of the effort of the many people operating behind the scenes, the people who give of their precious time: our volunteers.

Goals for 2007-2008
• Increase awareness of the Stratton Foundation's unique mission.
• Award $85,000 to support McCarty Grants and, at least, three Focus Grants.
• Involve community leaders in identifying their most pressing needs to guide foundation-giving priorities.
• Increase the number of grant applications and increase the financial support provided.
• Broaden volunteer participation in Stratton Foundation activities.
Our efforts focus on three areas: we raise money, we give grants and we field events that bring the community together. Our financial data, of course, reflects this trinity of activity:
• In 2007-2008, we will pass the $500,000 mark in cumulative grants distributed in our special little corner of the world … with 75% of those dollars distributed since 2003!
• We will host five major events which will involve over 1,000 people: Texas Hold’em (October), E-Auction (November), Men Who Cook (February), Stratton Challenge (March) and Tink Smith Golf Tournament (June).
• Our goal is to distribute more than 55 McCarty Grants and, at least, 3 Focus Grants which will, we estimate conservatively, directly impact more than 10,000 members of our community.
• We expect assets to exceed $300,000 by fiscal year end which both assures the future of the Foundation and allows us the flexibility to respond to unusual grant requests.
We are proud of all that has been accomplished over these last 11 years and, what is abundantly clear, is that we are “just getting started!”

Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and Advisory Board
The Board of Directors of the Stratton Foundation is a diverse group: long time and relatively new residents, full timers and part timers, folks from the bustling Northshire valley to the top of the quiet Windham hills, all coming from many different walks of life… all united by a common theme: their love of this special community we call home. Not surprisingly, this committed group of fifteen Directors has lived in Vermont, cumulatively, for more than 370 years!

Board members dedicate many hours to the organizing and execution of events, nurturing of volunteers, soliciting of direct support, vetting of Grantees, distribution of funds and the post-grant evaluation of the impact of our funds. It is a working Board that believes deeply in the possibilities of building a better community. If you are interested in possibly joining our Board, please contact Andy Avery or Jim Wilbur at strattonfndn@yahoo.com. Thanks!
